The LGBTQ Center of Southern Nevada is a recipient of a $100,000 grant to create Thrive: an LGBTQ+ Youth focused Affirmative Counseling program.
The funding is from UnitedHealthcare, a UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH) company, which is awarding $500,000 in Empowering Health grants to four community-based organizations in Nevada to expand access to care and address the social determinants of health for uninsured individuals and underserved communities. UnitedHealthcare is donating $11 million in grants through its Empowering Health program across 11 states. The grants will assist individuals and families experiencing challenges from food insecurity, social isolation, and behavioral health issues and support local health promotion and health literacy efforts.
Thrive: an LGBTQ+ Youth focused Affirmative Counseling program will provide access to therapy, social and emotional support services, and wellness education for LGBTQ+ identified youth, their families, and loved ones.
“The Empowering Health grant for Thrive will allow The Center to be a safe and supportive resource for youth as they navigate life as authentic members of the LGBTQ+ community,” says AJ Huth, youth program manager at The Center. “Professional counseling, support, and education can help stem the high risk of anxiety, depression, and substance abuse that youth who identify as LGBTQ+ in frontline communities face.”
